U6 & U8 Outdoor Soccer Guidelines and Rules

Have Fun!!!

U6 and U8 outdoor soccer is a developmental not a competitive program. Therefore no game scores or standings will be maintained. The idea of the program is to afford the players the opportunity to actively participate, learn and HAVE FUN. All coaches, managers, and parents are asked to conduct themselves in a manner that supports the spirit and purpose of the game.

The game will be played 4v4 (three players plus Sweeper-Keeper)

One coach from each team will act as the educators/officials on the field.  Their purpose is to educate the players,  i.e. stop the game, correct, and restart appropriately.

Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their teams players and spectators.

The game will be stopped approximately every 3-4 minutes to allow for line changes.  Please try not to blow the whistle if a team is obviously in a good position to score.  (i.e.  child is running towards the net with the ball and will have time to take a good shot.)  Please try to do your line changes when the ball has left the field of play.  If a shift has gone on too long you may blow the whistle and start one of two ways.  If a team had clear control of the ball they shall after the change be awarded the ball at that same point but they may not use a direct kick at the net to acquire a goal.  If you cannot decide who had control of the ball do a drop ball between two opposing players.  The ball must touch the ground before either player can kick the ball.

Changes on the fly are not permitted.

Unfortunately, it may happen that there is a mismatch between two teams in terms of athleticism and skills of the players.  In such a situation, the coach of the dominant team is requested to make such changes so as to dilute this dominance as is reasonably possible.

Examples of such changes are:

  • Playing the better players more in goal for that game.
  • Asking the players to play only with their weak foot.
  • Asking the players to make 3 or more passes before scoring.
  • Backing up your team further on kick offs by the opposing team

Please make the above noted changes in the spirit of fun and good sportsmanship.

Rules of Play

Place your field markers on your half of the designated field.  Place two field markers 6 yards (on the side line) from the goal line to identify where a goalie may pick up the ball.  Only the goalie may use his hands anywhere within 6 yards from the goal line from one sideline to the other.  (Sweeper-Keeper)

The goal shall be marked by two large pylons 9 feet apart and may not have and poles stuck in them to measure the height of the goals.  Please have a parent stand behind the goal and if the ball is over their shoulder (the parent) the goal will not count.

The home team will be responsible for time keeping.  Either coach may blow the whistle for any infringements.

Duration of the game will be two 25 minute halves with 3 minutes for half time.

A kick off will be taken from the centre of the field for the start of the game, after a goal has been scored and at the start of the second half.  Make sure you switch ends at half time and let the team that did not kick at the start do the kick off for the second half.

Players of the opposing team must be 5 yards away for the kick off.
A goal may not be scored from the kick off.
the ball must roll forward at least one revolution before any other player may touch the ball.
The player doing the kick off may not hit the ball a second time until after another player on the field has touched it.

Intentional tripping or intentional touching the ball with the hand other than the sweeper-keeper in their designated zones will result in the play being stopped and the ball being awarded to the opposing team for a free kick.  You cannot score from a free kick and the other team must be at least 5 yards back.

There are no penalty kicks.  If an infringement occurs in the 6-yard goal area by the defending team then an indirect free kick is awarded to the attacking team and is placed on the six yard line nearest where the infringement took place.  If the infringement is made by the attacking team inside the 6-yard goal area the defending team may place the ball anywhere in the 6-yard goal area for the indirect free kick.  You cannot score on an indirect free kick.

If the ball is kicked outside the sidelines a restart is by throw in from where the ball crossed the sideline.  The team that last touches the ball before it when out will lose the ball and the opposing team shall take the throw in.
A goal may not be scored directly from throwing it in.
Players of the opposing team must be five yards away on a throw in.

Goal Kick.  If the ball passes behind the goal line but not between the goal posts after being touched by a member of the attacking team, then a goal kick is awarded to the defending team. The goal kick may be taken from anywhere inside the 6 yard goal area.
A goal may not be scored from a goal kick.
Players of the opposing team must be outside the 6 yard area.

Corner Kick.  If the ball passes behind the goal line but not between the goal posts after being touched by a member of the defending team, then a corner kick is awarded to the attacking team. The corner kick is to be taken from a point one yard out from the corner of the field. Players of the defending team must be 5 yards away.

A sweeper-keeper may only score if he did not catch the ball in his hands and then kick it into play.  If any player kicks the ball and the sweeper-keeper gains control without using his hands they are allowed to shoot at the opposing team to score.

Have fun !!!

U10 Outdoor Soccer Guidelines and Rules

Have Fun!!!

U10 outdoor soccer is a developmental program. Therefore no game scores or standings will be maintained. The idea of the program is to afford the players the opportunity to actively participate, learn and HAVE FUN. All coaches, managers, and parents are asked to conduct themselves in a manner that supports the spirit and purpose of the game.  Coaches are responsible for the conduct of their team’s players and spectators.
Due to the fact that we did not have tryouts for U10 outdoor soccer, it may at times happen that there will be a mismatch between two teams in terms of athleticism and skills of the players.

  • The dominant team should also be backing up their team further on kick offs, corner kicks; goalie kicks, and throws ins.

The goal kick may be taken anywhere from inside the goalie box and must be placed on the ground to take the kick. Players of the opposing team must be 5 yards away from the ball. The goalie cannot score from a goal kick. When taking the goal kick the ball must be stationary.

Corner Kick:

If a player from the opposing team is not speaking kindly please inform their coach.
If your player is not speaking kindly please talk to that player.
If it happens a second time for the same offender tell the parents.
For a third time offence I would suggest the player attends the next game, but must watch from the sidelines.
Please be considerate of the losing teams feelings if you are going to do any kind of cheers at the end.

Remember you may be with that player for the next soccer season.

Some minor sports organizations require that some or all of their coaches have some level of NCCP certification. Carburn does not have any requirement at this time but NCCP is still a worthwhile training opportunity.  "The NCCP is a training and certification program for coaches, offered across Canada in more than 60 sports. The program was designed to meet the needs of a wide range of coaches - from those who introduce youngsters to sport to those who work with Canada's high performance athletes."...NCCP Website.

Indoor Soccer Program  Information

General Information for all age groups

  • The season begins in September for U10, U12 and U14 with player evaluations.

  • Practices for all age groups are held primarily at schools in Riverbend and Ogden on weekday evenings.

  • League games begin in October and end in March for all age groups with a break over Christmas and New Years.

  • PLEASE NOTE:  Games are played at various indoor facilities in Calgary which require an admission fee for adults to enter these facilities to watch the kids.  (Coaches receive free passes.)

  • In most cases your team will have one game and one practice per week.  Additional practices are at the discretion of the coach and subject to gym availability.

  • We are planning to use the Celtic Community Enhancement program for 1 or 2 player training sessions over the course of the season (U8 through U14).  These events could take place any day of the week.  Every effort will be made to ensure that the training programs do not interfere with scheduled games or practices.

Rules and regulations for using school facilities.

Coaches/Team Managers must review these rules with their players and& parents at the beginning of the season.

Coaches/Team Managers are responsible for enforcing these rules everytime your team is using the school facilities.

  • All players, coaches, parents, siblings, participants or spectators MUST remove their outdoor footwear at the school entrance.
Please bring indoor runners or indoor soccer shoes for in the gymnasium.  *Do NOT wear black soled shoes in the gymnasium.

  • We are renting the gymnasium only! Hallways and stages are off limits.  There should be no running/playing in the halls, stage or bathrooms. The climbing apparatus on the walls of the gym is not part of the agreement either. Please ensure that the players or siblings are not climbing on them as we are not insured for any injuries that may result.

  • Do not allow people that are not associated with your team into the school.  Carburn is responsible for anything that happens while we are renting the facility even if our players are not responsible for it.

  • Respect the school staff. If a school staff member says there is a problem with our rental permit and asks you to leave please do so and take it up later with your coordinator or gym scheduler.  Please listen to their concerns and respond immediately.

  • Try to arrive at the school just in time for your practice rather than early.  Do not interrupt teams practicing before you and do not enter the gym prior to your scheduled time.  Leave the school promptly at your scheduled end time.

Most importantly, let's respect the space that we are renting and the people we are renting it from. If we lose the privilege to rent space in our schools it will impact all teams. There are no alternative practice spaces at this time.

Carburn and the schools thank you for doing your part to keep the gym floors in top shape and creating a safe environment for user groups and school employees.
